David Cutrell first went to Haiti as a college student in the 1970s, and the country stuck with him. He lived in villages and wandered the countryside during the ten years he spent there doing anthropological research and working with a Mennonite relief organization. It was not until decades later that Mr. Cutrell began painting. With gestural brushwork and great knowledge of and admiration of the country's history and culture, his work, a "projection of his subconscious" reflects on his formative experiences in Haiti.
