Gary Monroe, a native of Miami Beach, has a copious career photographing people. His work has included decade-long projects: South Beach’s old-world Jewish community, Haiti and Haitian immigration, and tourism at Disney World. A prolific non-commercial artist, he has traveled to many places to photograph, including Cuba, Spain, Brazil, India and Egypt. Monroe’s work is distinguished by spontaneity and sureness, a knowing in the moment that has led to fresh, responsive imagery. His photographs are less didactic than they are inspired by wonder.
